Whether you're selling your unwanted items on online auctions sites, or sending documents around the world, your parcels still need to be well packaged.

Here's how to do it properly.

  • It's essential that you use the right size of box for your parcel. Underfilled boxes are likely to collapse and, and overfilled boxes can burst. Whilst you might be anxious about increasing the weight and so the cost of your parcel, you won't want your parcel to get damaged.

  • You'll need to use suitable and high quality packaging, especially if you're sending it a long distance, such as abroad. Strength, cushioning and durability are all important factors you need to consider.

  • Corrugated boxes are strong, and additional boards can make it even stronger, so if you need to send something fragile or valuable you'll be able to make sure that it's well protected.

  • Remember to use cushioning materials as well as using a strong box. Bubble wrap, foam, and rolled up newspaper can make excellent shock absorbers.

  • For large, or multiple parcels, you'll want to use strapping or strong packing tape where appropriate, so that you protect the seams, and keep parcels together.

  • Fragile items need to be placed in the middle of the box, away from the sides. By ensuring that there is a layer of good cushioning on the bottom and the sides and top can be protected too, you can be reassured that your valuable or fragile item is safe.

  • It's important to use an arrow or write on the box if the contents only goes one way up or the contents is fragile. The parcel will still need to be appropriately packed.

  • Many retail items are sold in packaging, especially blister packs, don't go in a box as a parcel well. It's a good idea to repack items so that they are well protected. You might even be able to get more in the same size box, and so save time and money.

  • Remember that bad packaging that can cause damage to surrounding items. If you're sending out liquids or powders, ensure that they are securely packaged, and then placed in a well packed box to ensure that they won't damage other items.

  • The delivery address and the sender's address need to be clearly marked. You might have pre filled stickers for this, or you might need to write on it yourself.

Now you know how to pack your parcel, you'll be confident that it will arrive in the condition you sent it in.
